Epithalon; Epithalone; AEDG (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly); synthetic analog of Epithalamin (bovine pineal gland extract)
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) designed as a simplified analog of Epithalamin, a bovine pineal extract studied since the 1980s by Vladimir Khavinson's group (St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology). Proposed mechanisms, derived mainly from cell-culture and animal studies, include modulation of pineal gland function and melatonin synthesis, antioxidant activity, and — most notably — induction of telomerase (hTERT) expression with telomere elongation in telomerase-negative human fibroblast cultures in vitro.
The core longevity claim rests on a small, frequently cited 2003 in vitro study reporting that Epitalon restored telomerase activity and elongated telomeres in cultured human fetal fibroblasts, extending replicative lifespan by roughly ten additional population doublings versus untreated controls. This is a preliminary cell-culture finding, not a demonstration of lifespan extension or an anti-aging effect in living humans.
